Hope For Life Programme

David Bascome, MBE
Founder of the Hope for Life programme

David Bascome began his soccer career at the age of 7 in his native country of Bermuda. By the age of 16 David was playing First Division soccer for the North Village Club, Bermuda. At age 18 he made his first appearance for the Bermuda National Team. By age 20, David signed his first professional contract with the Harrisburg Heat of the National Professional Soccer League, USA. After 13 seasons of professional indoor soccer, Bascome won his first Championship during his 2003-2004 campaign with the Baltimore Blast and has won two more since that time with the Blast. David is entering his 18th season and ranks 12th all-time in the MISL with over 1000 points. A five-time League All-Star. David has earned honors as a five time League All-Star and is one of the leagues most prolific two-way players and leader in scoring and games played. Off the playing field, David has also found much success and notoriety. In 2002 he was recognized by the Queen of England for his service to his community in his homeland of Bermuda. He is the recipient of Member of Order of the British Empire. He is also Harrisburg Magazine’s Peoples Choice award winner in the area of Sports Celebrity. David also finds time to write a weekly column for the Bermuda Sun. He is now the Commissioner of the ISL (Island Soccer League) in Bermuda and is the Founder of the Hope for Life programme, which is the fight against drugs and violence.

Hope For Life Mission

The mission is to equip kids with the tools that will enable them to avoid negative influences and instead, allow them to focus on their strengths and potential to achieve their goals. Hope For Life would give young people the skills needed to recognize and resist the subtle and overt pressures that cause them to experiment with drugs or become involved in gangs or violent activities.

HOPE FOR Life Primary Focus

  • Provide children with the information and skills they need to live drug and
  • violence-free lives.
  • Equip kids with the tools that will enable them to avoid negative influences and instead, allow them to focus on their strengths and potential
  • Gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence.
  • It gives children the skills needed to recognize and resist the subtle and overt pressures that cause them to experiment with drugs or become involved in gangs or violent activities.
  • Teaches kids how to recognize and resist the direct and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other drugs.
  • Based on the premise that prevention is the only long-term answer to drug abuse.
  • The unique program creates a positive atmosphere for students.

Four Major Areas:

  •  Providing accurate information about the danger of drugs, and the downfalls of violence.
  • Teaching students good decision-making skills.
  • Showing students how to recognize and resist peer pressure.
  • Giving students ideas for positive alternatives to drug use and violence.

Hope For Life Benefits Local Communities

  • Save Lives
  • Provide students with opportunities and alternatives to drugs and violence
  • David Bascome has a proven track record of helping people turn their life around through positive reinforcement, players of the I.S.L. are the proof
  • Permits students to see role models in a helping role, not just in an authority’s role.
  • Opens lines of communication between youth and adults.
  • Role models can serve as conduits to provide information beyond drug and violence related topics
  • Opens dialogue between students and adults to deal with other issues.
  • Since the majority of all crime is drug related, it is absolutely vital that we reach the children of Bermuda before it is too late.
  • Work with children to raise their self-esteem, teach them how to make decisions on their own, and help them identify positive alternatives to drugs.
  • Emphasizes the negative consequences of drug use, and reinforces the skills to resist peer pressure and intimidation.

Hope For Life Joining with ISL

The Hope For will be teaming up with the ISL (Island Soccer league) to help get the message across Bermuda. The ISL has a great impact on the youth sports in Bermuda and sports has been one attraction the young people have been geared towards, we feel that this affiliation would help move the Hope for Life’s message in the community. The ISL players and staff would be helping spread the message at ISL games and through media exposure. With the ISL have National Media (Fox Soccer Channel) that reaches over 35,000,000 people. This would be great exposure for a programme that would focus on youth development in our community. ISL has 150 players which have been put into a professional environment which has shown change in players lives, now these players are considered roles models.
The ISL players would be working with Hope For Life by attending appearances and Speaking engagements and building a close relationship with the young athletes of Bermuda

Hope4Life Open Arms Programme

Open Arms Programme

This programme has been design to help bridge a gap between youth development, business services, Government programmes and Governing Bodies of Sports. The Open Arms Programme will allow parents to explore other avenues for their children, if it has to do with getting their children evaluated for Math or English or just being a part of another sport. Open Arms Programme would help provide new opportunities for our young people
How does it work?
  •  All listed programmes that are in the community supporting the development of Bermuda young people will be asked to donate 12 hours of free services
  •  All programmes would send in their mailing list to HOPE FOR LIFE
  • HOPE FOR LIFE would then send a package to all the parents on the mailing list   Parents will receive a package in the mail containing all the programmes or businesses that donate 12 hours to HOPE FOR LIFE
  •  Parents would then sign up for the programme of choice and send the information back into HOPE FOR LIFE
  • HOPE FOR LIFE would than send the respective packets where they need to go ( companies that donated 12 hours)
  • The companies would than contact the parents to let them know when their programme would start
  • This is on a first come first served bases
  • HOPE FOR LIFE would have a full data base mailing list and be able to keep parents of Bermuda informed about new programmes and new events
  • Each child that signs up for a class would receive a HOPE FOR LIFE t-shirt
  • After the free hours are up than the parents would make a decision if their children need to continue, if so, at that time they must support programme on their own
Budget for Open Arms
  • Funds for packages and t-shirts
  • Directors fees
  • Staff or volunteers to organize paperwork and mailing
  • promotional drive for programme
