NISL TOPS ISL IN 2009 ALL STAR GAME

The NISL used stifling defense and two early goals from Matthew Stewart to top the ISL All Stars 4-2 at National Stadium on Sunday. The ISL got on the board first when Angelo Simmons beat Baltimore Blast Goalkeeper Sagu in the fifth minute of the first quarter. The NISL would answer back just moments later when Stewart took a feed from Vahid Assadpour in the middle of the box and beat Goalkeeper Jason Smith. The game was tied 1-1 after one quarter. Stewart gave the NISL their first lead of the game just two minutes into the second quarter again taking a feed from Assadpour and easily beating Smith. Moments later Baltimore Blast Defender Mike Lookingland took a no-loook feed from Rockford Rampage midfielder Bato and finished to give the NISL a 3-1 Halftime lead. Sagu was stellar in goal for the NISL making a couple of incredible saves to keep the ISL to just one goal. All three goalkeepers, Jason Smith and Zane Hendrickson for the ISL and Sagu for the NISL, made key saves in the third quarter to keep the game at 3-1. Bato scored four minutes into the fourth quarter to build the NISL lead to 4-1 before Cecoy Robinson scored on a toe-poke with five minutes left in the fourth. Angelo Simmons had a golden opportunity to cut the lead to just one with a minute to play, but his right footed blast just missed the upper 90 and sailed over the bar.

Notes: In the legends game the West defeated the East 6-5. Keith Bell scored the equalizing goal for the East with under two minutes to go to tie the game at five. Randy Bean hit the game winner a stinging boot that pegged the far corner of the net with just three seconds left in the game.

Baltimore Blast Cheerleader coach Liz Guaraldo brought half of her squad to Bermuda for the ISL weekend. The squad escorted the players into the All Star Gala on Friday night. Guaraldo helped to present the 2009 ISL awards trophies during the Gala, and the squad performed at halftime of ISL All Star game. Many thanks to Rosa Brown, Brittany Billings, Karyn Chandler, Danielle Scott, Keishawna Griffin, Michelle Poling, Sheena Owens, Megan Andrews, and Cheerleader Coach Liz Guaraldo for all of their help and support during the event.
