KNIGHTS CLINCH ACE INSURANCE BLUE DIVISION CROWN AND TITANS GAIN UPPER HAND IN PLAYOFF RACE AGAINST APEX
The Knights moved to a perfect 5-0 thumping the Storm 7-3, and the Titans gained the head to head playoff edge over Apex recording their first win of the season 7-5.
Game one was a back and forth affair with playoff implications decided in the last seconds of play. The Titans came into the game with Apex without a win. When the dust had settled the Titans picked up their first win and K'wonde Butterfield's last second goal gave the Titans the aggregate goal advantage over Apex for a possible playoff berth. Both teams are now 1-4 on the season with one game left to play on Saturday afternoon. The Apex got on the board first when Kori Goddard scored in the third minute of the game on a beautiful setup from Jenson Rogers and Jahron Dickinson. The Titans would take control from there scoring four straight goals. Lonnie Bascome tallied first on a left footed volley that found the far post to beat Apex GK Winslow Williams. Sean Perinchief scored two minutes later to give Titans a 2-1 lead after one quarter. K'wonde Butterfield scored his first goal on a rebound three minutes into the second to give Titans a 3-1 lead. It was the start of a big night for Butterfield. He struck again to make it 4-1 moments later off of a kick-in to give Titans a 4-1 lead. Apex would battle back with a run of their own. Jensen Rogers scored from in close to make it 4-2 and seconds later Mark Steede scored on a deflection off a Titans Defender to cut the lead to 4-3. Jahron Dickinson would complete the comback finishing off a 2 on 1 break in the twelfth minute to tie the game at 4-4 at the half. The two teams would go scoreless in the third setting up a dramatic fourth quarter finish. The Titans and Apex were battling for the final playoff spot. Because Apex won the first match by a goal and owned all the goal differential tie breakers not only did the Titans have to win the game, but they had to win by at least two goals. Kyle Jones got the Titans started in the fourth scoring from the top of the box to give Titans a 5-4 lead. Jahron Dickinson notched his second goal of the night two minutes later to tie the game at five. Butterfield notched his hat trick in the 12th minute on an assist from Lonnie Bascome to give the Titans the lead. That set up some late game heroics. The Titans still needed another goal to win the head to head tie breaker. Titans GK Michael Higgs joined the play in the last minute and with just seconds left Higgs restarted from the top of the Apex box and passed the ball to Butterfield, who beat Williams with just one second left to play. Butterfield's 4th goal of the game propelled the Titans ahead of the Apex. Titans can clinch a playoff berth with a win over the Storm or an Apex loss to the Knights on Saturday.
In game two the Knights continued their march towards a perfect season with a dominating 7-3 win over the Storm. Knights fans were out in full force to support their team on Thursday night. knights midfielder Ian Coke started the scoring midway thru the first quarter, Aljame Zuill's header pinged off the post and right to the foot of Coke who buried a shot past Jason Simons. Corey Dowling answered in a big way for the Storm two minutes later rifling a shot from the midfield past Knights GK Thomas Smith. The Knights would take the lead back later in the first. Aljame Zuill finished a feed from Vincent Minors Jr. giving Knights a 2-1 lead after one quarter. Ian Coke scored again from the top of the box to build the Knights lead to 3-1 in the second. Kwame Steede answered late in the quarter to cut the Knights lead in half. It was 3-2 at the half. The Knights lost GK Thomas Smith to injury at the half. He was replaced by Robert Richardson and remarkably Knights midfielder Jamie Smith scored the only goal of the third quarter, finishing off a 3-1 and converting Coke's pass into a goal to make it 4-2 after three quarters. The Knights defense smothered the Storm and they started to pull away in the fourth. Aljame Zuill scored his second of the night when his kick in was deflected into the goal and seconds later Ian Coke notched his hat trick to put the game out of reach. Domico Coddington put his name on the sheet with four minutes to play but it was too little too late. Lozendro Symonds finished off the scoring a minute later to make it a 7-3 final. The Knights will try to make it a perfect 6-0 against the Apex on Saturday.
