The Storm overwhelmed the Apex and the Knights used some late magic to edge the Titans in Ace Insurance Blue Division action on Saturday night at National Stadium.
Storm Coach Andrew Bascome trotted out a high scoring offense that defeated the Apex 7-3 in Saturday night’s first game. Domico Coddington and Chris Caisey each tallied twice and Kwame Steede also scored to propel the Storm offense. Caisey, Coddington, and Dmitri Butterfield tallied 1st quarter goals to give the Storm a comfortable 3-0 1st quarter lead. Caisey found the back of the net again in the second quarter before Jahron Dickinson finally got the Apex on the board 22 minutes into the contest. Coddington scored again at the 12 minute mark to give the Storm a 5-1 halftime lead. The Apex rallied in the third quarter. Dickinson scored his second goal of the game and Kiwaun Dill blistered a shot into the net from midfield to cut the Storm lead to 5-3 after three. The Storm continued to pressure in the fourth but they couldn’t find the net, and the Storm would make them pay. Kwame Steede scored at the 11 minute mark to give the Storm a three goal cushion and Grant McKellar scored with two minutes left for the final outcome.
Game #2 was one for the ages. The Titans scored three goals in the last three minutes of the 1st quarter. Kiwonde Lathan Butterfield set up the first two tallies. Kyle Jones scored on a Butterfield pass at the 12 minute mark and then Butterfield set up Mikre Pace a minute later. Jones scored his second of the quarter seconds later and it was all Titans 3-0 after one quarter of play. Aljame Zuill scored the Knights first goal of the season on a penalty kick five minutes into the second quarter. Butterfield would get that goal back two minutes later when he stole a Thomas Smith distribution and scored from the top of the box. Kyle Jones scored his hat trick with two minutes left in the half and the Titans were in cruise control leading 5-1. But a late goal by Ryan Purnell would change momentum and bring the Knights within 5-2 with :30 left in the first half. Purnell scored a natural hat trick with the next two goals in the third and more importantly pulled the Knights within one goal 5-4. Zeko White scored in the final minute of the third to give the Titans a 6-4 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Aljame Zuill and Anthony Rocker exchanged goals midway thru the fourth quarter and Ian Coke scored from the right side to make it 7-6 and once again made it a one goal game with just four minutes to play. It looked like the Titans would hold on but a lose ball in the Knights side of midfield was struck deep into the Titans end by goalkeeper Thomas Smith. Aljame Zuill settled it with his chest, then dribbled in and beat Titans GK Michael Higgs to tie the game 7-7. In overtime Knights midfielder Ian Coke gathered up a loose ball in the midfield, dribbled towards the Titans yellow line and unleashed a wicked shot that deflected off of a Titans player and eluded Higgs for the game winning goal.
